After receiving a dental implant

Dear patient,

you decided to receive dentures based on dental implants. Previously, we have already advised you of how the implants are placed, how long the procedure takes and which risks are connected with it. Now, we would like to briefly remind you of the most important aspects.

You are planned to receive an artificial tooth root, or an implant. Dental implants are normally made out of titanium which has a large osseointegration potential. You should be aware of typical risks and consequences of the surgery before giving your consent.

Conditions and procedure
A good oral hygiene is absolutely essential for receiving an implant. In smokers, risk of failure is increased. In the planning stage, some comprehensive examinations have to be done. Sometimes it makes sense to improve the bone structure by using bone substance or other materials.

The surgery itself is done under local anaesthetics. If desired or if the procedure requires more time and effort, in cooperation with an anaesthesiologist, general anaesthesia is possible, too. The dentist makes a small cut in mucosa and uncovers the bone. Then, a hole is bored into the bone, the implant is placed into the hole and mucosa is sutured. After 3-6 months, we can start with manufacturing and attaching of the denture.

After receiving a dental implant
During the healing phase, the implant should not be loaded. After surgery, clean the wound site with rinsing solution. Do not smoke! Cool the cheek and the treated site, clean your mouth very carefully and keep the examination appointments.

Possible complications
General risks: pain and slight swellings, postoperative bleedings are possible. If so, you can either apply a pressure bandage by yourself or contact us for further steps. Please take the medication prescripted according to the instruction.

Specific risks
The implant may become loose as a result of false loading or rejection, then it has to be removed. After a certain period of time, it is sometimes possible to try again. In spite of careful surgical work, inflammations, healing disorders, damages to the adjacent teeth, and nerve damages may occur. In rare cases, taste disorders or numbness of the treated area are possible.

Please feel free to contact me and my team for further informations.

We wish you good luck and a speedy recovery.
